Our Journey

Oja Shankar was an active teacher in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur state during 1971, and also at Chinjoroy and New Tusom in Ukhrul district during 1972 and 1973. He firmly believed that all religions and faiths contain the same spirit and values, so no discrimination should be made between them. He believed that all of us are part of the same divinity, so we should not make any distinction or difference between the human beings. According to him, service to the people is itself worship of God. With this spirit and zeal, he started many social and educational activities for uplifting the people, initially in rural Maharashtra and Karnataka states. He later on extended these activities, for the people of North-East states, which perhaps were not adequately connected so far, to the people of rest of our country.

While working as teacher he realized that the students in the North-East states are intelligent, painstaking and honest. He firmly believed that if these students are taken to big cities in other states of our country and given proper guidance as well as opportunities, they would certainly excel and compete with students in those cities. Therefore in 1973, he took along with him two students namely Mr.Shakan (Tangkhul naga) from New Tusom, Ukhrul district and Mr.Lalmohan Sharma (Meitei) from Nambol village near Imphal, to Sangli, Maharashtra, and started first ever hostel to accommodate them.  As the number of students increased, it became necessary to make permanent arrangement for their education.

With the help and guidance of Dr.S.P.Limaye, Dr.(Mrs.)Saudamini Limaye, Shri.Ashokji Telang and Late Shri.Anantrao Kunte of Sangli, Maharashtra; Dr.D.H.Patil and Dr.(Mrs.)Neelatai Patil of Borivali, Maharashtra; an organization called “Purva Seema Vikas Pratishthan (PSVP)” was founded. Later, on behalf of the Pratishthan, hostels were established in Sangli, Belgaum, Mysore, Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai for the education of students from different tribes of Nagaland such as Zeliangrong Naga, Rongmei Naga from Tamenglong district, Tangkhul Naga from Ukhrul as well as Meitei and Kuki. The Pratishthan made best possible arrangements for the education of these students.
